I am posting this as a warning of what can go wrong and why it went wrong in hopes no one here tries to do this. Recently a 56 year old Iowa woman was killed at a Gender Reveal Party. Some of the family members had made what they thought would blast the colored powder into the air revealing what sex the baby would be. They took a metal cylinder of some type drilled a hole towards what would be the bottom end for the fuse and welded the cylinder to a flat plate. Then inserted the fuse and partially filled the cylinder with gun powder and topped it off with the colored powder. At the top end of the cylinder they covered with a board and secured it to the top of the cylinder with tape, when the gun powder was ignited the board secured by the tape caused enough resistance that turned the cylinder into a pipe bomb. The woman that was struck in the head by shrapnel was standing more than 45' away from where the cylinder had been placed. The projectile traveled on a 144 yards after striking the woman. The 56 year old woman was killed instantly.

Reply:I like how the report says 'shrapnel'.... was it really or was it the whole pipe that went sideways??? I have seen people do the powder explosion thing and most like it shooting sideways.

Reply:Probably far more Red Dot than you would use in a 12ga shell and even more than a pistol round.I read a story of someone who likely ended up using a fast powder like Red Dot in their 500 magnum reloads instead of Win 296. The cylinder was in pieces. They thought they switched the powder, but apparently ended up loading it with the fast powder. I don't use dense fast powders in the 460 magnum as it is too easy to have a double charge or potentially a detonation (trailboss is much better).Average people have no clue how gun powder works.My grandmother built some indoor fireworks, but at least she was a pro. When I was a kid, she showed me the fireworks plant and how she built the large mortars and design walls that they used in shows all over the world.
