I need a 25' extension cord for my 45xp. I have a 50A breaker. The operator manual for the 45xp says that I can use 8 AWG for 200-240 VAC 1 Phase for up to 50'. BUT, everything that I read on line says that I need 6 AWG for 50A, and that 8 AWG is for 40A. It also looks like it depends on what the wire in the extension cord is made of; copper, aluminum, etc. I have found extension cords on line that are 8 AWG, but state that they are rated for 50A. I have found other extension cords that are 8 AWG that are only rated for 40A. Can someone tell me if I am safe to use an 8 AWG extension cord for my 45xp? If so, what should I look for in the specs for the extension cord? If an 8 AWG extension cord is rated for 40A, can I use that with my 45XP while running on 45A?Thank you,Doug

Reply:The 45xp is rated at 32 amps on 240 volts. A quality 8 ga. should be fine. Just don't leave the cord out in the sun on black pavement on a hot afternoon in Arizona and push the 45xp to the limit. Keep it cool.

Reply:I think I found the answer to my question about a 45xp being rated at 32 amps. The manual says: 220V (1-phase) with input current at rated output (45 A x 145 V = 6.5 kW) ... results in 33 ampsThanks,Doug
Reply:Yes, an 8 awg extension cord for a Powermax45xp is fine. You can run with smaller gauge at lower duty cycle, or at lower output amperage settings. 45 amps is the output amperage, the input amperage draw is based on what thickness you are cutting, what the input line voltage is (if your line reads 190 volts you will draw higher amperage from the AC power line than if the line read 240 volts). If you run a 10 gauge (smaller wire size than 8 gauge), you would be fine when cutting thin gauge with the output amperage set at less than about 25 amps. Cut thicker and the 10 gauge cord will heat up.....so don't do that! Jim Colt
