So I am shopping around for fume extractors as I get into the hobby to practice the welding skills that I am learning in school. I am going to school to be a shop teacher someday. I'm looking around for portable fume extractors as those are the ones that fit within my budget. All of them have more of less similar CFM good enough for "light duty" work. My question is what the heck counts as "light duty"? All I am thinking about so far doing getting scrap metal to practice MIG and Sticks welds on to refine my skill and maybe the odd metal work project for school/pleasure. But is that "light" enough duty?
Reply:Probably. You wouldn't want to know the cost of a HD fume extractor.
Reply:An air scrubber might be an affordable option,too? I have a portable extractor. It works well, though I think light duty / portability refers to jobsite than around the shop. It would be plenty for your shop, just not very convenient if you are not welding in very close proximity to the nozzle. Mine needs to be fairly close to the fume to source. The air scrubber might have a larger range., though won't take sparks.
