I hate buying a new grill every 3-4 years due to the burners or grate getting burned out and falling apart.  I figured I would build a grate that would outlast me.  I have about $30 in to this grate.   http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos

Reply:Nicely done.
Reply:Nice video and grill. I’d get those bb’s off the grate so you don’t tare your food up on them
Reply:That is one heavy duty grate!SS doesn't cost more if you have it leftover and sitting around...Now it did cost a little to get them electropolished, but it was worth it to me!

Reply:Did you take the warp out of it, or just let it be?  I hate it when all the welds are one side of a piece, makes it a PITA to straighten..........or a 3 page URANUS TUTORIAL

Don't mind me, I'm just an old fart

Reply:HA!!!  I was wondering if someone was going to comment on that.  I let it be.   The warp isn't bad though. The steak I had on it last night didn't seem to mind either.http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
Reply:I made a replacement grille grate using 3/8"  diameter rod and 1" square bar stock.  The bar stock was drilled to receive the rods which all float except for the end rods which are welded each end.I media blasted the assembly and then seasoned them with oil.

Reply:nice work on those grates.  i like the floating idea.   as for rust  the cast iron skillets seem to be fine so i would worry about that too much and its just another excuse to cook sausages allover the grill.bobs77vet/37ford4drEastwood digital TIG200HH190Lincoln Invertec 155sLincoln weldpak 100sears/craftsman (lincoln) 50a 240v buzz boxO/A rig Harris gaugesnexion cut 50 dxchicago electric (HF) 240v spot welder

I have a couple of AR 15's with stainless barrels that can shoot far better than I can, 2" groups at 200 yards are pretty easy with a good optic. And that is using all 30 rounds in the mag... that will heat things up well. And yes, I owned several early Mini 14's too.

Reply:Nice job! And thank you. You have just convinced me to make a replacement for my grill. I have a Viking, and it sucks. Every 3 or 4 years I have to replace the heat plates, $50 x 6, and the SS grates $85 x 3.I am not familiar with SS at all. Would it be worth it to use it since that is what I usually buy? (And it disintegrates also) Or should I just use hot or cold rolled round like you did? I am thinking for the difference in cost, I can make multiple mild steel vs. SS. If I would use SS, is there a special grade that will last longer? I wish I could make the heat plates too."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Steel rod (hot roll) is soooooo cheap compared to SS.  I didn't want to put too much $ into this grill.  I replaced all the burners and shields.  I probably have $120 into all the parts including the metal for the grate I built.  The most expensive parts are the burners, and they look like they won't last 4 years.  I like this large grill, but Ive considered just buying a cheap $100 grill every 4 years like most people.  This is the first time I have ever rebuilt the whole engine on my grill.  We'll see how long it lasts.   Once the bottom burns out, it's done.   I imagine this cheap hot roll grate will outlast this and the next one. Here's the vid on replacing all this crap.Last edited by captain belly; 02-17-2021 at 08:58 AM.http://www.youtube.com/user/c599209/videos
