I do a lot of work on my vehicles at home and always have. (Mostly Jeeps) one thing I've always wanted to do was learn to weld. I finally picked up a stick welder and have been playing/practicing. Finding beginner information on stick welding was not easy. Especially where to start. So I stared playing on my own. This first photo shows some weld beads that I made with different sticks and different amp settings. The amp settings are shown to the right (40,50,70). These were all made with 1/16 rod on a 110v stick welder. These next two photo show some 3/16 plate that I butt welded. The first photo (side1) was bevled 45 deg, then welded with one straight pass. The second photo was the back side of that weld, however it was not beveled, and I stopped and restarted in the middle.  Obviously I'm not the best welder in the world, but I am practicing!!  I have been trying different welds and techniques, but really concentrating on getting good penetraion and a decent looking weld. One of my first (of many I'm sure) questions is the arc seems to get a bit bizarre when it nears the end of the rod. About how much of the rod should I be using until I switch rods? Once I get near the end I have to feed it real fast, and usually there is no pentration. Also sometimes the rod gets HOT, glowing hot...??? too close to the weld for too long? Too much amps?BTW, Hi!
Reply:burn your rod down to about a 2 inch stub, then get a new one.your welds look good for a beginner.just keep practicing
