got a phone call from this  company that i had applyed at in dec 06 04 and they want to give me an apprenticeship as an iron worker..does any body have an idea as to what they do exactly?i thought they did welding there that is why i appyed there!!bcwelder
Reply:An Ironworker builds buildings, etc. I worked as an Ironworker a long time ago, and it involved a little welding, a lot of tying rebar for foundations, and structural (bolting prefabed buildings together).
Reply:Ironworkers are considered one of the  most dangerous occupations too.  Its tough work hanging steel.  I was a steelworker in the navy.  I did very little ironwork work though, I mostly worked in the plumbing sector doing utilityman work.  Good luck if youre interestedCHRIS
Reply:thanxs for the info!they said that 60% of the iron workers have there tickets in welding.so by the time the 3 0r 4 years are up i think i might have enough time in to  do my b &a tickets and the time i log threw my business aswell!!thanxs, bcwelder
Reply:i love the welding and fitting aspect of it the bolting together stuff is pretty basic..but it's union and a full aprenticeship as an ironworker!they said they don't do really high buildings so i guess i will have to wait and see..i use to be a drywaller so i'am use to really hard work and not afraid to swet..
Reply:The best part of it is it's union. I did a lot of bending and welding mid rails for walk ways, and welded a lot of grating down on the walk ways. The down side for me was when doing structural work, there were a lot of three day weeks due to weather. The highest I worked was 110 feet, but I'll tell ya, a six inch beam ain't very wide at 110 feet.
Reply:Lol at TBill...been there done that..  the baskets and man lifts are fun too.  In a manlift at 80 ft up she sways in the wind....feels like your manning the crows nest on look out for moby ****.   Its fun and rewarding work though.Good luckCHRIS
Reply:thanxs alot guys for the input! sounds like it's right up my ally...they did say that they don't do alot of high stuff it is mostlystuff like arenas ,home depot stuff like that ...thanxs,bcwelder
Reply:If you get an apprenticeship grab it!  Once a year you will be sent to BCIT.  You will have to get used to being cussed out a bit but once you learn to speak ironworker you should do fine.  I did my Fabricator apprenticeship trainng in the same building with the Ironworkers and Boilermakers.  There are all kinds of speciallties all the way up to certified crane operators.    Working at heights is pretty safe today because of rules requiring harnesses and man lifts.  There is lots of work if you can stay clean and sober.
Reply:I found the site for Local 97 ironworkershttp://www.bcbuildingtrades.org/page...pe=1&Bookmark=There is also the inside iron workers local 712  which I have worked with. You can see that you have a rich benifit package as will as pension.  It's not much of a consideration when you are young but later it becomes important. If my link doesn't work just google local 97 ironworkers
Reply:I was in the pipe union in dallas.  I really loved it.  Had to give it up due to conflicting issues with family and a necessary relocation.  At anyrate, I thought my first name was Motherf___'r.  Its alright.  Just laugh it off and dont worry.  Many times guys are roughing you up in order to make sure you are tough enough and show enough respect to pay your dues.  I had served in the navy and knew how to take a good *** eating.  Many guys gave me hell once or twice and after that treated me soo good.  Some, they continued a little longer.  There is always one in every handful that no matter what you do you cant earn their respect.  Just stay clear of them and you'll find if they are that tough for you, obviously they are that tough for everyone and they probably wont last.  Be good to your journeyman, show your foreman respect but dont hide from them.  Let them know you exist.  If not they wont notice you when its time to hand out recommendations.  If I was able to stay I had the pick of job in Dallas with my local.  I had a good relationship with the supervisor and I tell you its a good thing.   Dont be a kiss ***, just let them know you exist and your not afraid to work.  Soemtimes getting **** jobs means getting noticed by the boss.  Its your decision whether they notice a hardworker or a bad attidude.  Good luckCHRIS
Reply:well, this is my third day on the job and it is pretty kool!!i must say...the guy  that hired me owns the place and when i was talking to him on the phone he did say if i work out that he will give me an apprenticeship!!as for working out the guy that i work work with said that i will have no problem going far in this trade because i have the drive and the smarts to get there.i have been on construction sites for about 15 years so i know how they work and i'am also a welder.as in the local it will be 97 thanxs for the info and the kindness it sure goes a long way!! cheers to you both and maybe some day we will have a few beers after work ...lolthanxs,bcwelder
Reply:Just stay clean and sober!!!  I have seen a lot of guys put it up their nose.  As time goes employers are demanding commitment and reliability.   Be true to your word and show up on time and if you are asked to do OT don't balk.  Answer yes of no.  Don't say yes then not show up.  We have a candidate in our shop who will be one of the first to go when things slow down.Good that you have some welding tickets...  At least get your CWB for field work and another thing if you can handle the blood and guts a first aid ticket is a sure thing to keep you on the site until the end.I have been in the 712 several times...  that's the inside ironworkers (wimps) ... but we are dry and warm :')
Reply:staying clean and sober is not that hard for me because a rule of thumb is i don't drink on work nights and always there 15 to half hour before work time !!and i don't do the candy or smoke pot so i'am good there thanxs for the advice lotechman .thanxs, bcwelder
