I've MIG welded 1/4" steel before for some job-related stuff in the shop...but now I just want to do some of my own repairs on my car's exhaust system.I've never done stick welding before, but wanted to know if I could use this method to join my exhaust pipes effectively.
Reply:MIG is the way to go if you have very little experiance. If you have lots of time and lots of practice material then you can do it with stick. You may be one of the fortunate ones in the crowd but most of us without practice will burn holes in the pipe and have to patch. That makes the job look terrible and it may break as well. I have seen some with natural talent that could weld most anything. Most of the time though we have to practice to become proficient.I don't want to discourage anyone but I don't want you to think that you can pick up a welding lead and lay a perfect bead on thin pipe the first time out.I have been welding with stick, oxy acetelene, and mig for a lot of years. I have tried tig a few times in the past and with propper instruction and setup I was able to glob some metal on. I just bought a TIG machine and you would think I had never touched a welder before. So all of us have to practice.Good luck with any project you tackle just don't set your expectations to high.Jody
Reply:Thanks for your advice, Jody.Regards, the draftsman
