Just finished up with overhead in my AWS SMAW module, now moved on to vertical up. I'm welding on 3/8th A36 plate, using a E7018 rod, 1/8th or 5/32 diameter rod. My stringers keep coming out all pointy, like a witches nose. My work angle is pretty much perpendicular to the workpeice, going up, making a slight arch motion at the top, which is what the instructor showed me and it came out perfect(my speed was pretty much the same as his too). I'm doing the same damn thing, and still getting all pointy and such, at little better with the 1/8th in. rod, but not that great. My amps are set at about 100-110, on a Miller SD180 machine. Any input on what could be going on???Thanks,MattPS, getting some undercut also, so maybe my speed is to fast, i don't know.
Reply:E7018 is coming out fine now (1/8 and 5/32). Now, what about E6010??? Kinda coming out ok, using the inverted "t", but still not 100%. Any other techniques for the 6010? Whip and pause is a no go, i perfer the oval motion, any info? Thanks
Reply:I use a J pattern with 6010 uphill dont let the puddle pool long at all before moving back up the J. Hope it helps. what do you dislike about the 6010 uphill passes?
Reply:As far as welding coupons,i have never used anything but the whip and pause method with 6010.now in the real world ,i have used the what i think you are usingto to close a gap.i run about 80 -85 amps on 1/8 6010 rods.i like the smaller 3/32 7018s to run vertical up. use 1/8 inch sometimes at about 110 amps.i guess when you are testing ,you got to use what the test requires. When i took a pipe test i had the option on 7018s[3/32 or 1/8] same with 6010[3/32 or 1/8].When welding vertical ,the smaller the rod the more control you will have.same with overhead. If you are getting undercut and you have your heat right ,slow down a little.Wish i could be more help. |
