log manifold: which method of welding?

Hello I'm a newbie.  I'm taking two C.E. welding classes starting October 18th at bristol plymouth technical school.    I'm going to test the water out with welding.  I'm a carpenter by trade but i build audis and vws as a hobby/second income?I've read two books by richard finch and I ordered tonight: Pipe Welding Techniques ISBN:0827322488 this manifold was tig welded.I'm going to hopefully try out gas,mig, and tig welding these schedule 40 butt welds.  Hopefully figure out which method I like best.  I'm curious to get opinions on welding schedule 40 pipe.   I don't like doing things because they are "easy".    I don't have a problem learning something that is considered "difficult".   I find myself to be very patient.  I'll be sitting on a good chunk of cash in the future and I'm looking at all my options.If I were to excell quickly at learning how to weld.  I hope this is the case. What should my expectations be with Gas welding Schedule 40 pipe?  What about attachments like Meco midget torch.  Will that give me a cleaner smaller weld with gas welding?   I've been looking at the pipes on places like Burger king and wendy's and the welds are huge.ThanksJosh

Reply:Curious what vehicles you "build"? Im very much into Audi's and I own a 95 90 Quattro. Love it to death, but can't find much aftermarket avail. for it. Most of it is usually too expensive for me to purchase, but Im interested in any projects that you'd be willing to share.
