I was wondering if anyone knows any websites that show how to outfit a welding rig for pipeline work ? I was curious because when I get out of school I want to set up my own rig in the future. Right now I'm trying to get an idea what the truck, bed, welder and any special tools are going to run me. I have also notice from different jobs I have been on, that the pipe welders rigs are set up different from your average welding service trucks. Any information would be appreciated.
Reply:Wulf, I really didnt know that independents work on pipelines all that much . That is , if your talking about "Alaskan pipelines" and such. I figured only the bigger corporations get those jobs. In any case, Just some advice- Buy equiptment  S L O W L Y.  Get a welder, use it to pay for your next item, and on down the line. The point is ,time in the field will give you a better idea what direction to  go or what to focus on. You may decide you hate welding all day out in the cold and want to build motorcycles frames. Then your welding rig isnt much good to you. I may be off base here but I'm just trying to get a better Idea of what you want.Johnny
Reply:Wulf whereabouts you live too?IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I live in Portland Oregon. Booming out for me is no big deal and welding out in the weather isn't a problem. Personally I don't care for shop work been there done that, I would rather be in the field. Cold and rain or snow doesn't brother me but year on the Daytona Beach International speedway bridge took some time getting used too. That was one hot SOB in July welding on 60in cans.
Reply:wulf correct me if im wrong but I think youre a "seasoned weldor"  lol heh  but seriously I know this guy I sent you pics of  this is his website http://www.firstratefabricators.com/        hope this dispells any false notion that there arent independant rig owners on pipelinesIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I'm a seasoned and well baked welder. The reason I'm going to school is a while back ago I messed up my back and was given grants for retraining. So I decided to take my money and look into a pipe welding course when I found one that was a actual degree and had night courses so I could attend after work. When I was looking at the job outlook I found quite a few jobs looking for second hand operators and the pay was really decent. So right now I'm planning how to set up a rig when I have the training and funds.Thats a nice website TxRedneck and the piling pics bring back memories of 100degree days with 95% humidity good times.
Reply:lol  thanks  John is a good man  find him on a few forums as JTMcC  hes a real straight shooter too.  No bs  I like that.  I am one of those Im still pretty young, but ive had some time in the field.  I started school.  took an extended break..and now im finishing up.  Actually when I stopped, well I havent had any classes since then.   Nw I have two classes left.  Bunged my leg up good at work back on the 16th so im like wtf I hope its healed enough to finish my degree.  Atleast then I can hope at a job where I dont have to weld.  But I really dont know about managemnet either  god there soo cut throatIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Are you looking at just pipeline work?   If so are you going to give tie-ins a crack? You don't need much in the way of gear once you've got the truck and machine if that's all you plan on doing.Stephen
