Hello, I am building a trailer out of an old pickup truck bed. My question is what should I use to weld the C channel and Square stock to make up the tounge for the hitch. I tried using a 140 amp lincoln arc welder and I was running into a problem with burning through the truck frame. I was using 7018rod at a setting of between 90 and 110. At 90 I was able to control the burn through, but I was running too cold. Could I use a Mig for this project, would it be better? Any help would be helpful. Thanks
Reply:John, First what dia 7018 are you running?  1/8"?   If so you can try 3/32" as this will help with controlling the puddle size more.  Now, if you have access to a mig mig would work great for this as well, provided youve got enough juice on it.  Mig will handle the thinner wall much better than the stick, but as I said, if you get the 3/32 rod is a lot easier to control the puddle than the 1/8".   Of course with stick there are other rods too, like a 6013 that would do even better on something thin.  Nonetheless I do prefer to use 7018 on hitches and higher high stress areas.  good luckIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Yes,you could use a mig.I would suggest a millermatic passport, this machine goes from 30-180 and can use either 115volts or 230 which makes it very versatile and go anywhere at 45 lbs.
Reply:Thank you for the quick reply, I was using the 7018 1/8 rod. I will try the 3/32 rod. As far as the Mig, I wasn't sure it would do the job, I have not had much experience using them.
