I started a project of building a ladder rack out of bed rail. i thought it would be good practice  as well since im am welding all angle iron into square stock. however i was informed recently by a third party that bed rail is not a good choice due to it being a cheap but hardened steel that may cause my welds to crack from the vibration. im unfortunately almost done when i received this info.. is there any truth to this and if so is there any way to temper my welds with heat from a torch to prevent this. thanks for any help(this may be one of those you live and you learn projects)
Reply:I'm not sure exactly what 'bed rail' is, but over here I can't drive past an old bed that someone has tossed out without picking it up.The frames tend to be made of 40-50mm angle.I've used them for tables, racking, book shelves etc. They've saved me lots of money.I guess if it's on a vehicle it may be different?
Reply:Hardened steel is hardened because it was heat treated to be so.  When you weld it, you are going to mess up whatever heat treatment was there.  It doesn't really matter if it was hardened or not before you weld, the joint will come out the same.
Reply:Phew. So I can relax walking under the racks on the ceiling of my shed.
Reply:so by welding the joints. i have removed any hardness in that joint. then i dont see a problem with using it as it shouldnt be brittle enough to crack from the vibration.
