Question: can anyone tell me if you must have a code stamp for welding on pressure vessels or can an qualified/certified individual do it. I have the certs for 6g pipe tests for smaw, gmaw, and gtaw and all with various metals. Outside of insurance reasons , what proceedures does an individual have to do to be able to weld  on them. Also what is considered a pressure vessel. I forgot who but i did see someone in here post a pic of a air supply moisture drain-off tank. Would that be considered covered under asme section IX? Any help would be appreciated.Johnny
Reply:Johnny with the proper insurance you might be able to weld any piping coming into or out of a pressure vessel,But with out a code stamp R U N S etc, you cant touch a pressure vessel you could apply for your stamp but i bet you have to have real deep pockets. A pressure vessel is anything under pressure low or high. The drain off tank probably would be under code if in an industrial setting, but not if its for home use. This is the best i can do i am just a welder. I'm sure some one can add more detail than i can
Reply:What's all this stamp stuff??/Over here if you pass the test your coded to that companies preocedure, regardless of what your welding so long as the test covers it your fine.Stephen
Reply:Wirehunt- Is the place you work for a code welding shop? if they are they have a stamp - to which my understanding is like you said the company has procedural documents to weld certain code welding jobs and go thru yearly audits to prove that they essentially are following the specs for that job. I on the other hand , am a sole proprietorship. So I do not know if the same applies to me. Thanks for your input also B2N3
Reply:Johnnyweld if you would like I could get the information on how to go about getting your stamp I know we had to build a mock pressure vessel and then the IA come and inspected it other than that i dont know what the details were leading up to the inspection,But i could find out if your interested.
Reply:Yes, that would be a great help. Thanks , Maybe I could give you a ring and discuss some detail.
Reply:There is continual NDT and inspection on any preassure vessel or coded pipe work which can be daily on some jobs.I don't know of any yearly inspection apart from what the welding inspection companies go through. So long as the welding company has the right procedure and the welders are quailified to it we're away.Stephen

Reply:Only a Manufacturer or Company meeting the requirements of ASME and/or the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC)States have their own Boiler and Pressure vessel rules that they have adopted in addition to those required by ASME or the NBIC.For a manufacturer/repair organization to obtain the certifications to mfg or repair pressure vessels, they must have both procedures and welders meeting the requirements of ASME Sec IX. There are other requirements including Quality System requirements, purchasing practices etc. For repairs or alterations to existing pressure vessels, the company must have an NBIC "R" stamp. For New manufacture an ASME "U" stamp is required. There are a few other stamps available through ASME.The ASME code is broken up into various sections. Pressure vessels Sec VIII applies. Power Boilers Sec IWelding Procedure and Performance Qualification Sec IXMaterials-Sec IINon-Destructive Examination-Sec VHope this helpsLast edited by gaustin; 02-19-2006 at 08:15 AM.Have a nice dayhttp://www.weldingdata.com/
