I'm taking my first welding class at the local community college, and need a little advice. I skipped the basic stick and gas welding, since I taught myself to braze with a $49 home depot torch kit, and went straight into mig/tig. I'm a gearhead learning to weld in order to put an impala rear end with coil spring suspension into a GMC sonoma pickup.Anyway, I have no trouble mig welding horizontally w/flux core (or tig welding aluminum horizontally, for that matter). However, when I try to weld vetically up (3G position, I think?), the bead doesn't seem to work correctly. It wants to pull into a high bead with a crevice on either side of the bead. I've tried fooling with both the voltage and the wire speed, but I can't seem to get it right. There are 15 people in the class, and thus it's really hard to get help from the prof, he's so busy. He promised to help me this week, but since most of the guys in the class are learning job skills and I'm just a hobbyist, he tends to help them first (which I think he's right to do); so I'd rather not have to fart around the entire 6 hours of class waiting for him to help me at the end.Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.StonebreakerGraduate of the John Wayne School of Linguistics

Reply:Glad to see I'm not the only noob welder on the forum! I tried playing with the wire speed, and then I tried playing with the voltage. I think Sandy had it right - it's my technique. Although I didn't get it completely right last night, Sandy's weave suggestion really helped. A little more practice and perhaps fine-tuning the settings, and I'll have it.StonebreakerGraduate of the John Wayne School of Linguistics |
