Hey Everyone.I'v got a new weld pak 100 HD welder and took my old MIG conversion kit(K6101)) and put it on my new one. Everything except the cable Liner  that goes inside the gun. Does anyone know if the cable liner that comes with the conversion kit is specific to the mig wire ? Now I did just notice that the liner says for 025-.030 inch wire and I switched to .023. I'm just noticing a bit of a difference in my welds(not a s clean) and somethings just missing from the welds cant describe it but something is just missing, maybe its the .023 wire. Sandy got any info?MPWeld-Pak 100 Mig. New to welding and melting anything metal
Reply:Gosh, two things pop into my head right off the git-go. First is wire brand/type and second is gas flow. There are steel liners and teflon liners and neither one cares what type of wire you run. Teflon is better for Aluminum cuzz it's slicker. Regardless of classification, not all wire is equal. A quick easy test would be to swap to a roll of a different brand, similar size. No loss as you'll end up with a wire you can use anyway. If you've got a big box store like a Home Despot, pick up a 2 pounder of Lincoln's L-56 (er70s-6). It's good stuff and subject to tighter quality control.Low or irregular gas coverage generally shows up as porosity in the weld bead. On-again, off-again porosity (pin holes) or at times little volcano like risers. There is usually some darkening of the bead color to go along with it. You can use a fairly fine grinding disc to grind one of these out a ways to see if the pin holes and bubbles are full depth. A quick test would be to crank the flow up to about 30-35 cfh. If that helps a bunch then knowing you should be able to do the job at 15 to 22 cfh it means you could have a flow problem. A flow problem could be a constriction or a leak. Gas flow problems are fairly easy to narrow to a section if that's what it is. Look at the bead for fairly dark color, pin holes, and bubbles. If you don't see all of those I'd have to guess wire brand.
Reply:I'm not familiar with your particular gun but I know some push pull guns will leak gas back toward the rollers in the handle if the handle liner is misssing or the rubber o-ring that it goes through is missing or damaged. It's easy to figure out if that's it. You would be able to hear gas backing out loudly by the handle rollers if you put your ear up to it.
Reply:I know some guys dont have any dirt on their floors(not me). If you stick the nozzle in the dirt or grinder dust on the floor and pull the trigger, it'll tell you if there is gas there a bit safer than sticking a wire in your ear
Reply:If  your wire is too small for the tip, then it might not maintain constant contact with the tip, thus no electrical connection, just wire advancement. Don't know how the size wire would affect the liner, though.
Reply:tapwelder- If you have a large difference(big liner, smallwire) you can get some binding. I don't think that is his problem tho. I've also wondered about oversize tips and voltage issues.
Reply:Sandy, I'm going to grind down some of these weld beads, and check. I'm looking at the shrink rap from the .023 wire and is says alloy 70S-6 and heat BB I'm nos sure what that means. Also on the gas leak I did find at the tank where I was connecting my hose it was loose so I'm going to start using tape thread and refit on the tank connection and start using threading tape on the connection to the back end of the MIG welder. You know I was thinking about the tip I'm using and it is for a .025. You know I think I'm just going to go to  Home depot and get my self another role of the .025 and stay with that. I'm too close to finishing this project up. But once again you guys have really provide some great input. I'll keep you posted.Weld-Pak 100 Mig. New to welding and melting anything metal
