Ok, I tried posting this on an offroad forum and all I got from them was go buy a welder made for this purpose.I know they make a kit to run a welder off your alternator which will run  $800 or better by the time all is said and done.  I have this old welder that ran off a small gas motor (4-8hp, not sure exactly).  It's a 135amp DC welder with a 100% duty cycle. Can I go about installing this under the hood of my wrangler (88 with v belts)?  Is it just a matter of making a box for the electronics, then wireing into my existing alternator?  Could I replace my existing alternator with the one on this welder and use that to charge my car as well?  Or would I have to run two alternators, one for the jeep, and one for the welder?
Reply:I'm not sure whether you have to run two alternators but if you try to run everything off of one you won't be able to get as much juice for welding because some will be going toward the spark plugs. Whether that will be too much for your application (the particular weld you want to make) is anouther question. I know there is a welder made to be installed under the hood. It's from a company called Zena. Maybe you can get some answers to your questions at their website.
Reply:PyroThat is a cool find.  I don't see why it would not work.  I have a Zena.  It cost about $800 total to get it running.  What you have would actually cost around $1200 from Zena, since the controls would at the vehicle instead of at the electrode.  My zena is electrically isolated from the my vehicle starting/charging system.  I'd recommend a dual system.  The issues you might have is controlling engine rpms I added a pulley to my alternator and I have an idle speed control.     www.zena.net.
Reply:Here's a link to a site for building an on-board welder using an alternator and an AC Converter:http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/on-boardwelder/index.htmlSure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:Actually that "welder" looks like an alternator in a box Here is my take on using a vehical to power a welding supply.    It is a mixed bag, but I wouldn't bother at all if the welder wasn't isolated from the cars electrical system.   There is simply to much of an opportunity to damage something.Given that you actually have several options.    One would be to look up ReadyWelder on the internet which is a interesting take on Mig welding.    Bolt on a alternator set up for 24 volts to charge a 24 volt battery bank and your all set.    Apparently this approach works really well, better than I expected frankly. As someone has already mentioned you can also get a purpsoe made welding generator to hook up to your vehical.   This would be the way to go for stick. As far as what you got in the box If you can't support it it is pretty useless.   I can't help as I've nevers seen such a unit.    Ideally you will want to find somebody that has experience with this welder.   In any event I wouldn't spend a lot on it.The advise you have gotten else where is pretty good.   Spend you money on an alternative that is supported.   I'd qualify that by saying unless you can support it yourself.   It is one thing to slap somehting to gether for your own use knowing what you are doing, it is another thing to do so while not understanding what is going on.ThanksDave
Reply:it was built in NM, I have one with the origidinal books for it I use mine alot for small stuff it works great. I do know you need to make the pullys sized to make the rpms right to get the most from your welder.Their is a guy selling a alternater welder on ebay and he says something about using a reostat but I am not sure. I know it came with a robin wisconson 8 horse motor. If you want I can tell you what the books say for anything else.
Reply:Get yourself a Leece NeVille alternator from a large truck or emergency vehicle. They can do their rating all day long (usually over 200A) and you can get parts anywhere.Don't play with Delco, Nippon or any light duty junk- their rating is peak, not continuous.Don't run a single unit- run 2 alternators and dedicate one to welding.jimwww.jmarcoz.com
