I have been doing alot of reading, thinking, and searching, but have found no answers. I decided to look into a welder with a variable power setting. I currently have a Lincoln 3200hd. It has four settings for current. I looked arround and have found nothing that strikes me as valuable as what I have now. Am I dumb for wondering why I couldn't take out the 4 position detent knob and replace it with a sliding knob(infinate variable)? I have not found the need for a larger mig yet, I would just like more control over the one I own. Has anyone made this mod? Could I purchase a replacement knob from Lincoln, like on the sp-175? Then just swap it out? All input is welcome.
Reply:I think the transformer in that machine is tapped.  Each position is jumping in to the winding at a different location to change the current...I don't think the slider will work.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
