lefty tig welders?

im just wondering how many of you are out there.... i finally got back to work, but one of the stipulations of my return is that i have to hold my rod in my right and tig with my left, and naturally being a righty, its hard.  we have one guy in our shop who runds sub arc and hes a lefty, but thats it....  also, do you have any little tips for a new lefty

Reply:Been practicing leftie tig for a while now hoping it would make it easier to get uphill on the other side of those 6g pipes.  I think some people can do it and others just can't.  I know i can't.
Reply:Just practice, when I started Tig welding right from the start I made myself weld with both hand's, after a week I found it easier to weld left handed. I think it's got something to do with better control feeding the wire into the pool. And it's very handy to be able to weld with both hand's once you get into tie-in welding, anyone I teach now is made to weld both way's  So just keep at it, it will come to you.Good luckStephen

Reply:The latin word for left handed is sinistra and it means evil.  Dextra is the term for right handed...which means strong.  The bias agains left handed folks goes WAY back.  My wife and son are both left handed...I remind them that there MUST be something to this long standing bias.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I am lefty, and I don't have too much issue welding rightie also. I find myself holding the tig torch like a clown all the time, like a pistol, cupping it, using both hands for a second to get switched around for a better angle. I find that my opposite hand control gets better with more time on the torch, and I actually like some of the welds I do rightie. Hang in there, you'll get it.
Reply:doing either hand and foot is easy...  ... i can even trade feet as to what one runs the foot pedal or the positioner... ...zap!

Reply:burning in a but weld root i was having a hard time, but by the end of the day it started to come along, and doing sockets , well fudge, thats the easiest thing out there, i hate just tacking right now, i wanna start burning roots in again, but i guess ill have to wait.... the only challenging thing for me is going to be going to school and have my finger splinted and usless and have to do lefty for half of the 2 months, AND not be able to grind, docs orders forbid me from it, which sucks ***.... ill have to see if a buddy im going to school with will be able to grind for me

Reply:Try doing a 6-G Limited Access Restricted test coupon, then you will see how important it is to weld with both hands. With the coupon sticking through a hole in a plate of steel, the bevels stick through 2ins, 6ins off the floor on a 45deg. T.I.G root, hotpass. Stick fill and cap.If it's HOT, Don't touch it

Reply:I can do the left handed tig .... do it on 5 and 6 g pipe.  For me its easiest if I can get a brace,  whether on some metal, a broom stick, my own body if necessary....I can do either foot too, but right is easier for both.  Mig and stick,   I can stick better left htan right, but not as well as tigIF it Catches...Let it Burn
