Help Hi Group i have a question and hope someone can help me out.I would like to build a small Tower to hold a TV Ant. This tower would be30 Ft. I would like to use 3/4 EMT for this project this is my first weldingproject. i have a 100 Amp Arc/stick welder any tips will help me out.
Reply:Welcome Philip,  welcome to the jungle.Sounds like if you know thisi s the material and all you wish to use, Id recommend 6013 rod.  I guess something small like 5/64" or 1/16"   I suppose you could use 3/32" 6011 but youd better be good.  Either way,  if youve got more specific questions Im sure the guys will be glad to answer IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:to get "off topic" but staying on topic... why dont you look into some trusses that are made for stage lighting?the tubing fits together and with 3 10 foot sections all you need is the cable and ground anchors....to hold it up....problem solved just another way out...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Just checked online stage lighting truss low price 69.00 i think this willbe DYI  thanks Philip
Reply:EMT is galvanized, thin wall, welded seam round tubing and isn't appropriate for this sort of application.  If your antenna is very large at all, it will likely fail when it takes a stiff breeze.  Unless you are are a very skilled stick welder, I doubt you could weld multiple sections of EMT together using the SMAW process. However, you should be able to find something more appropriate for your application and even cheap to acquire.  Radio Shack sells 5' and 10' sections of tubing intended to be used as an antenna mast.  I believe it's 1.5" or 2" in diameter and has about a .120" wall thickness.  The ends are tapered such that each section can be stacked.  The last time I checked, each 10' section was about $15.  They also sell hardware for guying and attachment to other structures.  A 30' freestanding mast will need to be guyed.-Heath
Reply:Being a ex-commerical radio technican, I can tell you that most of the time, depending on what city you are in, go into the larger more populated cities that have gone away from broadcast tv and switched to cable. Most of the time, if you offer to take their tower down, you can have it for free! I have done this in the past and have got 4 or 5 towers this way. It's helped my amateur radio hobby in the past, but have lost interest in that now with working on a hot rod project, so all the radio stuff is out of my mind. And now cars are parked in that space!www.oldtruck.sytes.net
