I am taking a welding class and am having a problem finding the answer to the above mentioned question for my class. I have looked everywhere for an answer and am starting to wonder if "burn away" is not the correct term. Help!!!
Reply:Burn through???  Melt through??  There are glossaries on the AWS site as well as TWI site "job knowledge for welders"
Reply:Welcome Weldgirl,  hope you enjoy our lil hole in the wallIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Welcome Weldgirl to this great place. I think the phrase means (undercut) from too much voltage/amperage.If it's HOT, Don't touch it
Reply:Only other idea is that the end of some gussets or open ends on tubing " burn away" when welding to them. A good fix is to start a weld at the end of the weld for 1/2" or so. And then back weld into it. You can stop, or control " burn away" in this manner. If that is what burn away is. The other simple answer is to reduce heat... whatever it is, it will burn away less with less heat.
Reply:I am going to ask my instructor tonight if "burn away" is the term that he really meant or if the sheet should have perhaps been updated. I will let you know. Thanks for the help!
