I am puting a plated post on top of an I beam. Has anyone welded the holes in the plate to the beam instead of drilling holes and using bolts? I cant weld the edges of the plate to the beam because there is wood around where the plate goes.  This is the verticle post that will hold an over head gantry.

Reply:i kept quiet because i had no idea wtf he was typing about... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:My first thought was he meant a plated as in coated post(galvinized)However, I believe he means a column post with a base plate. My quick response would be to use the bolt holes. Plug welding the plate mounting holes is a bit tricky if you dont have the experiance. Too many variables. I would use the bolts. And NOT butter bolts either! Gr. 5 minimum and probably Gr. 8 to really sleep soundly.
Reply:I agree with TEK.  If the bolts fail, you can't be the blame.  If ya do weld it and it fails you'll probably be looking for another job.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
