hey zap, in an earlier thread you suggested someone put a solid weld all the way around the angle being used. i know you tig everything, so the vert up/down doesn't bother you like it does us stick welders using 7018. us everyday joe welders, keep a hundred pounds of 7018 on our service trucks. most of the work i do is heavy equipment and a rock crusher and it's all suggeted 7018 for everyday work. i know that a 7018 in the vert up is one stong weld, but same rod in the down position makes a pretty weld, but strength being in question. i guess my question is this. do you advocate the full weld on tig and mig, or all processes?"Retreat hell, were just fighting in the other direction"Miller Trailblazer 302, Extreme 12 VS, Dimension 400, Spectrum 375, HF 251D-1, Milermatic 251 w/ spoolgun Hypertherm 1000Lincoln sp 1702000 F-450 to haul it
Reply:I know this was directed to Zap, but I just couldn't help but put my $.02 in. 7018 electrodes are not meant to weld vertical down at all. Even if they do make a pretty looking weld, the slag is way too liquid to make a sound vertical down weld. I even looked in all of the manuals that I have to see if there was an exception and I couldn't find any. They all said "Not Recommended for Vertical Down." Sorry to Butt in

Reply:Gee Golly I was under the idea that the 1 in e7018 meant all position hmmm! I also weld on equipment (lrg mining) and we primarily use lincoln 71 elite with argon /co2 cover gas and if need be grab 7018 but not very often.

Reply:ok i get it now...if at all possible dont stop and start a weld no matter what the method if possible...the start and stop points are where the failures begin..the more you can do witout stopping..the better..i know what you mean now by 7018 on ups and downs...sorry i'm a little slow..but anyway... if you have to stop and theres no way around it....try to stop and start on a flat area..not on a corner...look for stop and start points before you even start the weld..go thru a dress rehersal so to say...if "flipping" the piece/part over is possible then do it at the most convienent time...when its flat and easy to get to...whew......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home. |
