Broken Key

Hey guys, been lurking around here for months now, and I have a question that searching didn't solve...I broke the key in the ignition of my car, and was wondering if by any chance it could be welded, mist likely with a TIG... there is about 0.5" on either side of the break, before the top, and before the actualy cut of the key begins...I am not sure what sort of metal the key is made out of, hence my question... I would just replace the key obviously, but I can't find another key like this anywhere, for one, it's a lot longer than any factory key, and I had it specially made for the 4 honda's in my garage, so that that one key will work in all 4 ignitions...is there any hope for this key, as of right now I can still use it, as I have enough sticking out of the ignition to turn it with plyers, if that gives you an idea what I'm working with.thanks guys, Mark
Reply:what kind of key is it? some were just plated brass...what does it start?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:hmmm? tuff one? solder. it but still won t be as hard as a new one take broken parts(both parts) to store.  they can make a new one from old keyed end  i would not try. about a dollar at wally world
Reply:Mark, even if you could weld the key, the time it would take to make sure it fit properly, and be strong enough when you got done with it wouldn't be worth it, and it still might break. If it requires a special blank, then a locksmith is your best bet. What would it cost you if your repaired key broke at the wrong time or place. If you had a locksmith do it, you could also have him make 2 keys at the same time. Hope this helps
Reply:thats the problem... the dealer won't do anything for me, and a locksmith is going to charge a lot of money... this key was specially cut, and a run of the mill key cutting achine won't be able to cut it, (hard to explain) I'd post a pic, but for my own reasons I don't feel comfortable with that. I don't like posting pictures of my car online, let alone the type, and cut of my Keys... I don't live in the best neck of the woods for stuff like that. and Zap, it does look like plated brass, from what I can tell...thanks again guys, Mark

Reply:Silicon Bronze, TIG I cut two regular keys down to just the essentials, welded them back to back, now I have my house key and my shop lock all in one small piece, in my wallet.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
