Spent the day in welding shops.....Did not know how many Houston had. I did discover that welders are like cars....no 2 dealers have the same price..It seems that the most bang for the buck is the Lincoln. Besides..I liked the red...Now this is my first Mig and I am dumn as a stump when it comes to which brand is better etc. I based my decision primarily on readin' and forum comments.I am looking at getting the POWER-MIG 255C from Lincoln.Online, free ship, no tax 18bills and change. A local supply place charges 288 for a 200 cf large cylinder of argon or argon mix.I wanted to get your valuable opinions on my selection. Please feel free to tell me I am a dumnass if this is the case.The only really difficult part is figgerin' out how to sneak this past Momma when I get home and puttin' it in the garage....;>Thanks a lot fellers....Ray

Reply:I have used red ones and blue ones and either will do the job.  My purchase decisions have almost always been driven by price.I toured the Houston shops earlier this year looking for a good deal on a Mig and got one from Texas Welding supply on Hempstead Hwy.  I was surprised at the price variations.As to slipping it in the garage all I can suggest is expand the garage to make the welder look smaller.Good Luck
Reply:I dont know about the pricing or much about the Lincoln machine, but any of the big 3 brands in that 250 amp category will be good machines, I'm sure.   As for the gas, an argon/co2 mix (75% argon) is good for welding most types of steel.   I use the argon mix for steel and pure argon for aluminum.   I haven't tried straight argon on MIG with steel.  I imagine it should work but I dont know how well.Have fun with the new machine!
