I am looking to buy a tig set up. I am fairly new to this type of welding but am ambitious, so I want a machine that will allow me to grow into...  What machines would you all suggest for my first?  Thanks for the help.  Best regards.
Reply:I am assuming you are looking for AC/DC tig for personal use.  If so, I would go with the HTP 201 or the Miller dynasty 200 or the Thermal Arc (whatever they come out with to replace the 185tsw).  Any of these will be good machines to use and grow into...the next bump in power will cost a lot more, so if you got more money or plan to really grow, there are 300+ amp tig units from the same makers that still run off household current but are available for a substantial price increase.  Bigger than that, and you need a huge breaker and/or a dedicated nuclear power plant.  These three I suggest are fairly comparable in most respects and have a good power to price ratio new.  The miller has the added avantage of working off 120v and 240v and is lighter than the htp.  The prices vary a bit...so, check out the current offerings and see what the differences are.  If brandname and portability are really important, the miller is probably the best choice...otherwise, you might just choose the least expensive. If DC only what you are looking for, the choices get more varied and more difficult to focus on a coherent group of machines without knowing what you are going to weld regularly.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
