OK, the goal is to weld aluminum. Nothing thick, in fact, only to about the spec the machine is *supposedly* capable of. I've searched. I've searched all around and I know that the results are most definately NOT in favor of the Tigmaster/Econotig for this application. But I'll probably be able to get the Tigmaster locally and practically new for $1000, maybe less, and everything else I can find would have to be shipped ($$$). I want a TA-185 or a Syncrowave 180SD (like the one my Dad got today - IN NH! ), but they're just not here. In fact, I don't think the Thermal Arc machine actually exists. Those things are hard to find. Lastly, this is not going to be a work machine. It'll be a hobby machine that I'll use to make non-structural car parts. So, Tigmaster or hold out for an SD or TA?
Reply:Damn, no love for the Tigmate, huh? Funny thing, that's actually helpful.
Reply:I have no problem using an EconoTIG for some of the fabrication I do. Yes, a bigger machine will do thicker material but unless your making a car frame out of 1/2" aluminum, you don't need a bigger machine.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:OK, that's cool. I just got back from picking it up. I got it for $900, and it's in great shape. The guy I got it from was really helpful, and even fired it up and demostrated a couple things with it. I think it's going to work for what I want. I'll be back with more questions! |
