Total newbie here. When I looked at the cool welding table thread I was rather surprised by the thickness (3/4" - 1") of the steel some of you are using for your welding table tops. I know it's just my ignorance and lack of experience, but why so thick? I can see not wanting the table to warp, etc. but would think a brace or two would suffice and be cheaper and a lot more manageable -- wow, those things are HEAVY. So, please enlighten me. Thanks.Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Life is good!Typos are there for those that look for them. I try to do something for everybody.
Reply:Lot of times I tack angle or pipe on mine to make jigs, it's 3/4"I have a 1/2" table on casters that I use to cutting and such
Reply:In about 6 months you can put quite a bow in a 1" table if it is used every day. I have one now that is 6" thick. I also straigthen some pretty large weldments at times though also.
Reply:so you can beat the crap out of stuff that dont "co-operate" on it and not worry about anything.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Thicker is better, room permitting. I wanted mine light enough to move it around. Mine is 1/4 inch with plenty of bracing. It has bowed something fierce over time. But as always, any welding table is far better than no welding table. You start with the materials and budget you've got and go from there.
