Hey all:Cold weather has arrived here in Southern Ontario, which has raised a question, what do you use to heat your shops? My dad gave me an old ( 1994) Aladding kerosene heater, which is like new and rarely used and works well. I was wondering what the rest of you use.
Reply:Salamander or as you called it kero heater.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:If you're cold in your welding shop then you aren't welding enough.
Reply:If I'm welding enough to heat my shop, then I'm opening my door so that I don't poison myself with the fumes Kinda defeats the purpose. I have a propane forge that would heat the shop nicely, same problems with the fumes though.Last edited by andreas; 12-09-2006 at 10:02 PM.
Reply:Kerosene heater or propane catalytic heater are what I use. Which ever one strikes me at the time.
Reply:a buddy of ours uses a fireplace he made out of 50 gal drums and a fan behind them
Reply:I have both a Kero convection and a Kero salamander.  I try to stick to the convection as it runs silently.  However when it's really cold in the shop (below freezing) the salamander is 3 times faster.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill

Reply:Wood. Double barrel stove made from two 45 (Imperial) gallon drums stacked. heats two 16x32 shops nicely even in our kind of cold. Yup, I'm Canadian too!
Reply:Reznor 60k btu gas heater hanging from the ceiling. Just had it installed. My shop is about the size of a two car garage (it is actually garage space) that's part of my house. The walls are insulated and I got the thing hooked up to a programmable thermostat. When I was a kid and worked on my own cars, motorcycles, and other junk, I was never warm in the winter. This year I'll be out there in a t-shirt when it's 20 below.
Reply:Kerosene (non forced air) heater....in 2 car garage.  Does fine in Texas but I don't know about Ontario.  One question though, cold weather just arrived in Ontario?  What's your definition of cold.  I thought that stuff hit you guys a couple months ago.
Reply:I dunno 'bout Ontariariario, but over here in Manitoba, it ain't cold until at least -40°. We had a little cool spell there about a month ago, only down to around -30°C, but now it's warmed up to a balmy -3°C, or 27°F. i don't even bother starting the woodstove when it's that warm!
Reply:There you go - hahahaha. Same here, I'm only about 3 hours south of you guys so it gets cold here too. I'm sure it is not as cold but hits pretty close. Once it hits 34 here, I shut the 'ol woodstove off and let the sun warm everything. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Munchkin propane boiler infloor heat. I have two industrial smokeeaters to handle exhaust fumes. I was going to put a wood or cornburner outside, but it really isn't cheaper than propane unless you farm. It cost me $390.00 last year to heat 56x36x10 shop in michigan.
Reply:You yankee types are nuts!!!"cold" in these parts is when the temperature dips below 50f. I would literally freeze to death if it dropped to 18 below! We has a 20 year record low for this time of year a couple of weeks back, 18 degrees. We were having serious power fluctuations that morning because our electric co. couldn't keep up. I'd still like to move farther south!!!I have a 28 by 30 shop and heat it with a 85,000 btu oil furnace and just works great set the stat at what i want  when i am paiting my welded work prodjects i turn up the heat to 72 dec. fer.  i am in south east ontario canada  gets cold here in the winter
