Got a bobcat 225NT, & a plasma hypertherm powermate 600, & when cutting the plasma is dropping(quit, cutting off) have to drop amperage to 20 amp, the bobcat is rate 8500 Watts. I am using air,, would nitrogene help any? What would be needed to run a powermate 1000? thanks wrench
Reply:You don't have enough power. Most of the bigger plasmas draw 40-50 amps @ 240 volts.Watts required to run it is volts X amps,or 240 volts X 50 amps. That would be 12000 Watts continuos minimum. You also need to look the continuos rated output of your generator, not max, peak,or surge watts.A lot of the time,an 8500 watts generator will only put out 5000 watts of continuos power.Running a big unit like that in the field from a generator output is probably not feasable.Use a smaller plasma, and use torches for bigger stuff. You'll probably need a 15-18 K generator to run a big plasma like the 1000 reliably in the field.
Reply:That unit should only pull 30 amps. The Bobus should have plenty of juice to run it. One thing with the Bobus Catus is the fine power knob MUST be at full power for the generator to be at full output. If it is less, you will have less power. Could this be the trouble? Was the knob at 10 ..full power?FWIW, that unit is rated at 8000 watts continuous. 8500 is peak watts.

Reply:Curious. I wonder if all is well with the gen part. Are the brushes in good order? Have you gotten a voltage reading at high rpm's off both the 115 and 230 sides? That may give an indication as to how it's doing.
