i am new to this site but i like everything i've read so far.  Here's my question.  I need a welder capable of making bumpers( 3/16" )  and other ornamental and tools maybe up to 1/2".  I would also like to be able to weld aluminum for work and play.  I am a farrier and amateur blacksmith and would like to be able to weld my own custom aluminum shoes.  What should i get that won't break the bank but is good quality?  I have taken some classeson SMAW and used Mig plenty of times before.  I am fairly good welder (passed all my stress tests and bend testson 1/2" plate)  and would like to build on my skill level for my own benifit.  Any suggestions?
Reply:That is a tough one because you state you want to be able to do aluminum as well. I would say go with either a Clarke, Miller or Lincoln in the 180 range or the 210 range...but then those are close to "breaking the bank". IMOYou can do aluminum with a MIG, it's just not pretty. If you plan on making a quality product with nice looking welds an AC/DC TIG would be the way to go. In that area, I like my EconoTIG by MILLER for small to medium projects.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:when i say i don't want to break the bank, i mean i don't want to spend more than 1200-1400 hopefully.  Will the ac/dc tig also stick?  I don't know a lot about different models.
Reply:Yep, an AC/DC TIG will do stick.  If you could find an older 300 amp unit, you could do just about anything you want, stick weld heavier steel and stainless, TIG weld smaller steel stuff, and TIG weld aluminum.
Reply:You can find a decent EconoTIG or TIGmate (hobart) online or used for under $1,000. I agree...no breaking of the bank!John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I think ZAP found an older HObart 300 amp'er used for $500 or 600...a great way to go.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:dbf,I would think the new Hobart Handler 187 would fill the bill more often than not for you.  But a Millermatic 210 and a spoolgun would seem ideal, just outside of your budget.Presently the HH187 can be had at Tractor Supply for approx. $550. A bottle of C25 and Argon would set you back another $300 +/-.   Thats a lot of bang for the buck!Regards,Clay
Reply:Thanks guys.  Clay, I just rainchecked a HH187 so it's funny you said that.  I saw it last night and thought it might be a good place to start and maybe upgrade in a couple of years.
