I have a 67' ford truck frame I want to weld (MIG) up some old holes in and want to use a dowel and cut it into waffers (7/16 and 1/2 inch holes).  I assume there is all types of metal I can get in this form?  What should I get, does it matter?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  Todd
Reply:Your two common choices will be cold rolled and hot rolled. You won't need anything any more exotic than either of those two. Short sticks at a hardware store will cost as much as a full stick at a steel supplier. I personally wouldn't mess with cutting wafers for holes that small. I'd back the holes with a copper plate and fill them in or fill them slow and grind flush even if I couldn't come up with a backer plate. A 1/2 inch hole isn't much of a hole.
Reply:what sandy said..or take a holesaw and punch out some slugs out of 1/8" plate for hole filler..merry x-mas ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Then again, it never hurts to have extra material laying around.  Sounds like a good reason to buy some even thought I wouldn't use it for that purpose.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
