I am just starting out and I have my welder -- a Lincoln 180c, a 4.5 " grinder, a 14" cut off saw and safety equipment. I am wondering what to buy next - should it be clamps, magnets a bender or something I haven't even thought of? Are clamps better than magnets or do I need both? Is bigger always better?I cant' afford to buy everything at once so I would like to get what I need most for my first couple of projects which will be a welding cart and a welding table -  I have been searching the Forum and have found many good ideas for both projects.Any suggestions from you more experienced welders would be most appreciated.
Reply:i would buy some clamps and magnets.  a tube bender would be a good first project...
Reply:Clamps are better than magnets, when they can be used.  Clamps don't fit everywhere, though, and the big ones are expensive.  Grab a couple of each like kdc3 said.
Reply:Youve got a tank right?  C clamps and Vice grip clamps (I just use 2 small and 2 big) and the magnets do come in handy.  Bench grinder.  Carpenters 45 45 90, 30/60/90 triangles, level, framing square, angle finder.  Er, getting carried away.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:Clamps and magnets (a quick way for getting things at 90, 45, and 135 degrees) try Harbor Freight. A metal gage* comes in handy, vise, square, hand cleaner, more welding wire, LOTS of metal...  *Warning: I have been wrong before!New small workshop, small MIG, oxyacetylene set with a DHC-2000 that I'm learning to use and really like. Life is good!Typos are there for those that look for them. I try to do something for everybody.
Reply:sounds like u could use a torch perhaps. there always useful
Reply:Bessy clamps!
Reply:A tape and a square!!!  The 2 essentials.  Quick square, framing square, combination square, angle finder, etc.  After that clamps.  Don't cheap out on the clamps, you get what you pay for.  I like the visegrip type clamps and the adjustable c-clamps.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Thanks for all the suggestions, I do have a tank, although I haven't set it up yet, I have been practising with the flux core, I did get some scrap and I have ordered somw books. Next I guess it will be clamps, magnets, wire brushes for the grinder- (I can already see why I want a second grinder) and a framing square. Thanks again to all for the helpful suggestions.
Reply:You can never have too many clamps.  Haunt flea markets and yard sales and never pass up a chance to buy good clamps.  Most of the clamps sold by big box stores are aluminum or some cheap alloy that will not stand up well to heat.

Reply:Drilling holes in sheet metal.  Their single flute design doesn't grab the metal and send your work flying when you try to punch through the thin stuff or elarge existing holes.

Reply:Measuring tools, gloves, clamps, magnets, chipping hammer, spare consumables, and an extra large spool of wire.  Those little ones don't last long and will leave you frustrated when you have to stop everything to go get more.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:stepped drill bits start at 1/4", then "step-up" to a larger size, then again, and again. It let's you drill just about any size hole with the same bit, they're only $45 or so Look at Irwin's website and see if they are there.***************************************Lincoln AC225 stick welderLincoln HD100 WeldPak flux core wire feed welderThree of the cheapest grinders money can buy
