Welding plugs in machine bases with 308..I know 309 will work..but i'm having Great success with the 308..no pre heat..no post heat..anyone else have luck with this??i'll post pics when i get home.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:If it works for you, fine, but it ain't right.(I'd put the "no-no" finger wave guy in here, but that's too cheesy)309 SS is the recommended filler for dissimilar metal welding, such as 304 SS to carbon steel. The weld chemistry of a dissimilar weld depends on how much of each base metal is melted, and how much filler is added.  In general, 309 provides enough Chromium and Nickel to the mix in the weld pool to result in a ductile austenitic structure, like the 304 and 309.  On the other hand, 308 does not generally have enough Cr/Ni for the dissimilar weld mix, and it results in a hard brittle martensitic structure.
Reply:Well it worked good for what we needed..from what i'm told they used to use the fluxcore mig! on these..Cracks everywhere..So guess this is an improvement..Off to the welding store for some 309 tomorrow..We were in a real rush today..no time.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:That's cool, if it works, it works.  Just like to advertise the use of 308 on carbon steel for the potential risk of failure involved.I have to admit, I've broken the 309 rule myself.I used 308 filler to weld 316 Swagelok tube fittings to small carbon steel pressure vessels for the purpose of hydro-pressure test the vessels.  These 1/8" thick vessels burst in the sidewall, not in the welded fitting, at over 10,000 psig.  This sounds scary, but actually was very safe since the vessels were completely filled with water, no air space whatsoever, so they simply expanded and rather gently ripped open.  Not the case if there was much of any air space within!
