Good morning everyone,I have jus lashed out and bought a $1600 AU, pulsed TIG welder, it is a CIG, it weighs aproximatly 5 kilos, came with the leads, red end tungstion, stick holder for the MMAW process. I have also gone out and got a gas bottle, with 100% argon in it. for the pulse, it is actuallt set on Hz (im assuming its Hertz) cause there is only 2 settings, 1 is "3hz Lift" and the other one is "250hz Lift"What my problem is, is that i was welding some very thin pieces of stainless together, aproximatly 2.5 mm, and i variated the amps a lot, i started out on about 110 amps but that just put way to much heat into the stainless and blew holes left right and centre. so i dragged the amps right down to between the range of 55-75 amp, but what was happening, was that on the other side of where i welded, it was as if the wire that i was pushing into the molten pool was goign all the way through to the other side, and it was a black sh!tty looking porosity filled messIt wasnt an actual weld bead but it was like all scaley and didnt look right. I still cant figure out what it could be to this day.I will post pictures of the welder and the welds as soon as i can get the old man to take them. Thanks again everyoneShaneAustralia"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:Thats tough to diagnose without pics..Did you get everything as clean as possible? What is the gas flow set at?sharp point on yout tungestion?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:What you were experiencing is a very common problem when welding S.S.It's called "sugar" and happens almost everytime you weld S.S. unless you take the necessary steps to make sure that it doesn't. Like a backpurge or the use of Solar Flux.Last edited by ZTFab; 01-26-2007 at 06:52 PM.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:yea everything is clean as can be, the tungstion is sharp at the end, i have it stickign out about 3-4 mm depending on if im dragging the cup in fillet joints, but yea i cant work out what it could be, the only thing that comes to mind is that the metal is gettign that hot, that its melting all the way through, and its only the continuous dabbing of the filler wire thats keepign it at a stable temp, as i noticed if i just leave the arc in one position for a long time (5-10 seconds) i can actually see a hairline size of undercut on the toes of the weld, so im thinkin that this material is heating up to fast, and the under side of where im welding is heating up past the point where stainless can oxidise.the filler wire is 1.2mm and im pretty sure the tungstion is 1.2mm Thoriated (the red one)...when dad gets home ill get home to take some pictures so you can see what i mean.EDIT: The gas is set on aproximatly 12-14Last edited by Weazy; 01-26-2007 at 06:58 PM."One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
Reply:I weld stainless all the time and dont have the above problem...What am I doing wrong???I mean its like no big deal to weld/fuse stainless..???????Whats going on?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Weazy, turn the gas up to about 25cfh. That should help some of this problem. The other thing to do is turn down the amperage a bit. When you are welding on the top side of the S.S., the back side is bleeding through but has no shielding gas to help stop contamination of the molten puddle.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:I have tig welded Stainlees pipe were I was adding Argon inside the pipe for a backpurge. I have very limited tig knowledge and havn't heard of a flux. Is this a paste you can put on the back side of the weld to prevent sugar. Also as agian I not sure but could the tungsten be the wrong one. Ceriated, Thoriated, or Pure tungsten. I know some work better on sertain materials. Here is a question I have for the tig welders here. what is considered the best tungsten to use when welding stainless and thin steel or sheet metal.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Thanks ZapMigs working great. Have a cold one for me.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Back purging is need on SS if you want your opposing side to look clean...or sugarless. I've heard of the flux but have yet to see it or use it. I might have to check local supplier and test it out.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:but i think this would only apply to thin sheet, like what i am welding at home here, because i welded 2 pieces together, in a fillet, both the pieces are 4mm thick, and there was no sugar on the other side because it didnt burn through all the way to the other side, and the amps were obviously cranked down low enough so that it didnt burn all the way through.thanks for the help guys, muchly appreciated, i will post another topic and show off my baby and u's can all check her out..... thanks again guysShaneAustralia"One World...One Muay Thai...Muay Thai Never Dies..."
