Anyone know what the correct filler wire is for TIGging Titanium? Thanks for any help.
Reply:Its been long time since i did any titanium welding..But I think we used titanium..1/16 dia filler..But that was many yrs and many beers ago.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:From my Lincoln GTW GuidebookBase Alloy/Filler Material per AWS Spec. A5.16ASTM GO/ERTi-1ASTM Gr2/ERTi-2ASTM Gr3/ERTi-3ASTM Gr4/ERTi-4There are eight other filler materials specified for more complex Ti alloys. If you know which one you're welding and it's not listed above, post the mix and I'll look up and post it.Last edited by Teddco; 02-01-2007 at 09:17 PM.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig Lincoln SP135+ Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:I'm not sure what the actual grade or alloy of Titanium it would be, but just in case I run into a repair job at the track(wheelie bars, suspension stuff), I'd like to have a good general filler. I'm gathering all of the fillers I need to have on hand, now that I have the Dynasty in my trailer(or anywhere else I might need to take it )!
Reply:190MPH It depends on the alloy your welding grade 1&2 are your most common grades then you can get into plate and tubing there are 27 or so different grades of that. The most common in racing (dont quote me) is probably Ti-6al-4v and you want to weld that with grade Ti-5. Remember when welding Ti Your Oxygen content you want to keep below 20 ppm. You might want to take a containment chamber along with your Dynasty.Ok so now for Grade1 Ti you use Ti-1 filler, Grade2 Ti-2 filler, Ti-4 - Ti-4 ,7 Ti-7, The good thing about Ti is the price has come down its only around 80$ and up a pound.Depending on the grade.
Reply:$80 a lb. Hope I never have to buy any. I have never messed with Ti.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Thanks for the replies. Do you need a complete containment chamber, or can you use an internal purge along with an extra external gas hose around the work?
Reply:190MPH To be done correctly you do want to purge the inside of tubing and the back side of plate also. Do you need a containment chamber yes and no.To weld anything im gonna be running down a strip at 200+ yes. If you can build a purge canister fit to the pipe, so it actually sits down in the argon it would work if its done properly. How much Ti experience do you have? Running a hose in a can wont work either without charboy or 00-000 stainless wool in the bottom of the can so the argon flows evenly and isnt stiring oxygen into the can. You could also build an aluminum foil dam around the pipe also and purge the dam out. |
