Im wanting to learn how to weld, iv had a kean interest for a while but have never really given it much thot, reason that im taking an active interest now is that the frame on my bike is in need of welding up, iv been told that a mig weld would be best for since im a total begginer, i also have an interest in cars so that would also come in handy, the frame on my bike is steal if thats any help lol, so im wanting to get my own welder and build up from there, wot kind of things should i look for in buying a starters welding machine, is it best to go cheap now and get more expensive with skill level, or buy a quilty machine from the beggining, wot power ratings and size of wire ect.Iv had alook on ebay and ther seems to be some nice looking machines for not alot of money but then again im not sure wot im looking at or wot for, the machine would be used for light steal project around the home and for hoby use as well. any help would be great
Reply:It's better to go bigger than you think you need now... But for what it's worth, I have a Millermatic 135... a 115v machine.  For what I do, it's great.  I wanted 115 for portability, as I use it on a generator a lot..I also use CO2 for shield gas... but then again, I'm cheap. What ever welder you get... get an autodarken hood... you won't regret it.
Reply:Well if auto body and light gage work is your favorite then one of the GMAW rigs would be the preferred choice. Depending on the size of machine you purchase you can fall back on FCAW for more depth of fusion on thicker materials if those situations come up. Can't help you on brands tho. Not sure what all is available on that side of the pond.
Reply:Whats available over there?  Is your power 50 hz?  Do you have 3 phase available?  Allways go as big as you can afford.  If 208 is no problem, Id go with a 250 amp machine with a good low output on the bottem end (20~30 amps).  I hear this is a good all arounder.  As to which one, its simply a matter of preference.  I think that tap'ed thermal arc 251 is pretty impressive spec wise (20 amp low up to 300 amp).  One of the members has a thermal arc 281 but prefers his 350 amp 3 phase esab   Mig welding is more learning the machine with some technique thrown in (I know, can of worms).  I think Id save my penny's and get a nice tig unit and a small mig (just to speed up tacking and for hard to reach places).  Dont forget to get something to cut with (o/a or plasma, pick your poison).  Bandsaw or chopsaw is also a must. btw, You can braze alot of the stuff your talking about there with O/A or Hydrogen/Oxygen.Dont worry about being a beginner, after a couple of go's youll be hooked and youll suddenly become a novice welder.  Decisions Decisions.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
