Im just curious if any of you think its possible to build a portable water well drilling rig from the plans this site sells? Im not interested in building one, just found this (http://drillingfab.com/) online and was interested in seeing what some of you all think ? I know here in a lot of cases wells have to be drilled up to 1000 ft deep !! These rigs can only go up to 300 feet ..
Reply:hmm... just a quick glance, the limitation is the transmission shaft holds the weight of the drill string. So that gets me to thinking, how about a thrust bearing to hold the weight... that way the transmission only has to TURN the string, not support it. Maybe recycle a clutch throwout bearing or something to that effect.
Reply:i have looked at several similar rigs and, in the pics, they always find a patch of perfectly level ground on which to demonstrate. I wonder how you keep the things plumb while drilling. also, most of them claim to be able to drill to depths of 300 feet. even if you can maintain straightness, turning 300 feet of pipe, even with an efficient water flow seems beyond the capacity of the small engines they use. i need a drill press to keep a quarter inch drill straight. |
