I have a front differential housing from my suburban that has one of the ears that bolt it to the frame broken off. I have two questions about this repair:1) Is this a safe repair?2) Would it be better to TIG or just braze it back together? Thanks.
Reply:Hey BMG,IMO, you would be better to braze or even better, silver solder. The housing is a casting, and the lower heat range of brazing or Sil-Sol. would avoid cracking. I have done Sil-Sol on transmission lugs with great success that are still in service. I use a low-temp/high tensile Sil-Sol for these applications....DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:I concur with Yorkie that a braze job would be fine for the repair. I would say to use a silicon bronze rod for the repair, as the strength is greater than the sil-sol. But, the sil-sol will bond maybe the best. Just clean the hell out of it first!!
Reply:Hey,Thanks for the replies. I think I will go with the silver solder for this application. This makes it a lot easier. Thanks again. |
