What do you guys that have a mig use to lube the cable sheath so you don't contaminate aluminum welds? I was just thinking how the electrode is left in there for a while and is kept safe from rust with some kind of oil. Then when its changed out for aluminum, wouldn't the lube/oil contaminate the weld via the oily electrode? Can mineral oil be used?

Reply:One of the most effective methods I have experienced for maintaining a clean and free steel liner was carpeting. A strip of carpet about three inches wide and two foot long is suspended over the wire roll so that it constantly rides on the upper part of the welding wire roll. In the two years I worked in that shop I never saw a liner problem or a liner replaced. The feeders were exposed to all the grinding dust and smoke in the shop but the wire stayed clean.
Reply:Oil and fire don't mix well. If you must use oil use the stuff they use for oxygen regulators... if you can find some!http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...&highlight=oilSure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:Don't use any lub in the liner, it will just collect more dust and dirt. What I use to clean the wire is a foam type ear plug. Before putting wire in drive rollers push the wire through a foam ear plug longways. You will be shocked at the amount of dust and dirt that ear plug will stop from getting into the drive rollers and liner. |
