I have been lurking for a few months and really respect the posters on this board. I am just a hobby welder with a Century 125G Mig and a Hobart Stickmate AC/DC.Any way, my question is how do you safely haul C25 and O2 cylinders, specifically in a pickup truck? I have been placing the 40 cubic foot C25 cylinder in the cab on the floor and brace it with some old towels to keep it from rolling. I know this is not safe and even worse, my cylinder does not  have threads for a safety cap. I am looking to get an oxygen cylinder for propane cutting soon. This tank will be much larger and will not fit in the cab. So, I need to figure out how to safely haul in the open truck bed. Thanks in advance.
Reply:You can put a "headach rack" in the back of the truck ..Stand the bottles up and chain them to the rack on top and bottom..Maybe make a 3-4" high "fence" that captures the bottoms nice and tight..But never transport bottles "Ready to use"..No regulators attached and Caps ON......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Carrying your tanks in the cab is asking for trouble.  Forget the fact that its a gas.  You have a HUGE bullet sitting in your cab.  If you get into some kind of accident, it could hit you in the head or "just" break your leg.  Bottles should be hauled in the upright position and secured.  Tie em in the back standing up.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have always hauled my bottles in the back of the pickup laying down, with the value end towards the cab. Is this not a good idea?He who dies with the most tools wins
Reply:Please see http://www.aws.org/technical/facts/FACT-30.pdf for basic rules for handling and transporting compressed gas cylinders.  Also see Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 49 - Transportation, Part 173.300, Subpart G, Gases; Preparation and Packaging.  The latter probably does not apply since you are not a commercial shipper, but the regulations present safe methods for transporting compressed gas cylinders.  I have a $40 HF cylinder cart that I strap in the back of my pickup like a headache rack and then strap the cylinders into it.
Reply:There is nothing wrong with carrying your bottles horizontally, as long as they are secured. There are some issues with acetylene, but none with any other gas. I slide my 330cf argon bottle in the back of the truck and strap it securely to one side. It is relatively easy for me, alone, to get the very heavy bottle into the truck on its side. I would not want to have to stand that bottle up by myself, THAT would be dangerous. The guys at the LWS have no problems with the way I carry my bottle either.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:I am a career fireman in major NE city, have done several years in the Fire Marshalls office and on line duty as well, Have seen many things, do most anything with your bottles but don't carry them in the passenger area. Flammable or not. Have seen lots of terrible things happen with pressure and non pressure vessels."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I leave mine laying down.  I have clamps on my trailer for them.  There is one supplier around town that delivers tanks laying down in the back of the truck and they have 2x4's screwed down in the bed a few inches apart to keep them from rolling around.
