Fellas, went from never welding before in my life to in January getting a MM210 adn LOVED it so much I got a sync 200 yesterday! I talked my way into our plant paying for me (engineering manager) to be allowed to take welding classes that our maintenance dept is getting and did some TIG welding on Tuesday, which solidified my thought to get a TIG machine......Here are a shot of my VERY first TIG welds - of course with the instructor barking things in my ear as is progressed....a few were on my very own though. He thought I did pretty good for not even knowing how to start the arc when setting down.Anyways got my machine last night and ran home at noon and played with it a little...the beads look comprible to the above photos, but I have no color to mine at home...they are just a dull gray look, like I have no gas....the gas is flowing 100% argon and I have hear/feel it. started at 20cfh and went to 40cfh with no difference. Now things I am not real sure of the guy at the welding supply place gave me red 3/32 tungstun per my request (told to use that by the instructor) but he just handed me a bunch of filler rods (some Cu color, and some stainless rod)....What filler rods do you guys recommend for mild steel and other type automotive stuff? Also what do you think I am doing wrong that mine are not colorful like these one....again I am just getting into this TIG stuff....so maybe it doesn't matter. But mine look oxidized at home....Thanks fellas....I am PUMPED about this welding stuff! The wife is getting sick of looking at "Beads" and calls me TIG nowBest Times with 434 Naturally Aspirated Vette60 - 1.261/8 - 6.37@ 107.25 MPH 1/4 - 10.08 & 134.9MPH1/4 - 9.60@144MPH
Reply:I believe your "problem" starts with the very basics..CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!!!I read this..Went out in the shop..Took some stainless..Ran some beads..I'll post the results when I get home..But in the mean time...Here's something for thought..http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=9523...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap...yeah you are right I did not clean the stuff like I probably should have.....but we didn't at work either or don't those welds look good either in the photo above? Again I am just getting into this and wanted to get some insight into this.I checked and they are using here at work 120T filler rod...I got a piece and want to try that on my home machine and see what it looks like.Best Times with 434 Naturally Aspirated Vette60 - 1.261/8 - 6.37@ 107.25 MPH 1/4 - 10.08 & 134.9MPH1/4 - 9.60@144MPH

Reply:From my little experiance with tig, I would guess your running too many amps at home. I would get the same results untill I turned it down some and they came out much better. But! im using a Buzz Box tig setup with a Hi Freq box soo I dont know it that'll make a difference
Reply:went out and welded up my wishbone for my 4link tonight with it.....checked all the lines and they appeared to be tight...took the torch apart and put it back together....the front may not have been on all the way...it seemed to go on further than I remember it being on before....but can't say for sure.....Anyways, I am now getting that rainbow look to my welds.....had a few that looked dull but I am sure that is me and not having a good angle on the torch......The bracing I wanted to put on the wishbone locator, came out looking really nice. It sure take a lot longer with the TIG than the MIG though....but the fun last longer. I can see me really getting into this with the TIG. LOTS of fun and I am starting to really get a good feel for the peddle and controlling the puddle size and movement. The angle of the torch is the only thing I really am having a tough time with. Should have taken a few pictures,,,,but I am tired and heading to bed...Thanks for the comments.....little more tweaking and I should be well on my way to becoming pretty confident. Just need more metal to weld NOW!

Reply:Ski - while pulling the wheels on a car is nothing short of amazing, I'm sure you realize that it actually slows down your overall elapsed ET? If you haven't already, you should adjust it so you hook and go. Are you running ladder bars with coil overs or a four-link setup? Either way - both cars are smokin'!John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Our car went from blowing the tires off EVERY run, to doing what its doing in the pictures with the suspension I built for it!!!! it completely changes the instant center of the car and flatout works. The beauty of the system is it completely bolts in to the car, with no welding required....not that that would be a problem, but it passes the super stock tech and amazes people how well it works. The car is 2500lbs in the front and only 1400 in the rear!!!! So when it pulls the tires its nothing short of amazing!Get in touch with me if your interested...I have a few guys that want them and I am going to be making more of them shortly.Cool with the syncro; you will like it....I am really taking a liking to it. Just wish I had more time to play with it. 5 kids with two new twins that are 4 months old, and a wife that is required to be on call and at the hospital on nearly EveRY weekend

Reply:Sweet Vids man, what are you running for a setup in the Chevelle? Motor trans etc. I wanna hopefully run in the 10's and il be happy. At the moment I have my mind set on a twin turbo small block... just for the shock factor.
Reply:The chevelle is a 555CI n/a motor, with a rossler T350 trans, 3.90 rear gears in a stock 12 bolt. 9.6@144MPHThe vette is a 434 n/a motor, Rossler T350, independant rear (nearly done with my solid rear conversion) with 3.73 gears. 10.15@135MPH - driven on the street all the time.....Both cars are actually driven and inspected for PA. The chevelle only gets about 4-6MPG though, the vette still gets over 18MPH with the fuel injection!
Reply:hey ski_dwn_it, where do you live? I see you are at Keystone Raceway in the Chevelle video. I'm there regularly.
Reply:Live about 2.5hrs away in St Marys area.....we get to keystone pretty regularly as well, but mainly hit Beaver Springs......both about the same distance away. Like Keystone except for the friggin rocks they have everywhere in the pits. A group of us got spots there and are debating about paving our section to eliminate that issue....can't believe that more don't complain about it....What do you drive...Keep an eye out for me there and come over and chat sometime if you see us there. Talk to you later...
