i was wondering what size miller or lincoln i should get. i am only gonna be doing bracket welding for our quads and dirtbikes with some sheet metal stuff. what size is best for this type of welding. i nwas thinking 140 but im a noob as my name says so please help me.
Reply:I cannot tell you what to buy, but a 140 will only put out about 100 amps at welding voltage.  If you are not going over 1/8", it should be great.  With some practice and skill, you will be able to go up to 3/16 or even 1/4".DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:You won't be dissapointed with a Lincoln/ miller 135. They are great units, very easy to use. And, they are plenty strong enough for what you will use them on. I had one for years, and loved it. Paul at ZTFab uses his as much as any other welder in his shop. Definitely the best bang for the buck, welder wise.

Reply:I, too, would recommend the HH140 as minimum equipment.  Keep money in the budget for C-25 shielding gas, esp. for sheet metal welding. If you can swing it, try for the HH187.  Three times the machine, for not much more money; just need 240V power, which is easier than most people think.
Reply:All the big names are good welders. The BEST bang for the buck in a 110V welder is the Clarke, in my opinion. It also has the best warranty. Miller has good customer service, a good following by Local Welding suppliers but expensive consumable parts. Hobart has good prices, shares a few parts with the Millers and has GREAT customer service. I called a few weeks ago and ended up talking with an older, very intelligent, gentleman that has been with Hobart for the better part of 30 years. We talked for probably 30 to 45 minutes. Reply:Clarke is Clarke Tool. A large manufacturer of tools right here in the good 'ol US of A.  I don't know their complete history MAC but they've been in the US for quite a while. Here is their website: http://www.clarkeusa.com/John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:after reading more on this site i am more thinking about the clarke 180EN, is this a good welder. it is in my price range and it is bigger then the 140. i have 220 in our garage so the power wont be a question. also what gas should i run argon or the mixed stuff.
Reply:You want to use a 75/25 mix of Argon/CO2, you can just ask your Local supply for 75/25 and they should know what you mean. For deeper penetration, with a tad more splatter, you can use straight CO2. The straight CO2 is also cheaper.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
