pipe welders

I was talking to a relative and he was telling me about a device they used to ground with in the field....he called it a "grasshopper".......can anyone tell me more about this or possibly have some pictures ? Is this something you can purchase or something you make ?  He also informed me they would laugh me off the site if I showed up with my "darth vader"  (as they called it...its my miller elite helmet) style helmet. He told me all they use was pancake style helmets. I googled this and mostly came up with pancake filters.....although a few hoods showed up. Looks rather odd but I can see how it would be very light and zero glare from the sun with the way it fully encloses your eyes like goggles...thank you for all your help  Kelly
Reply:It's something you make, ask him to show you one. You have to ground in the bevels or on the weld itself.Sarge's or Wendy's are the common pancake makers.JTMcC.
Reply:JTMcC, Thanks for the info. I had a feeling it was something made but hoped it wasn't so I could see a pic. I found Wendy's site.....no luck on sarge's.....I appreciate your help Kelly
Reply:I might have a picture of one, or more likely a picture that has one in it that you can see.If so I'll put it somewhere so's you can see it. It's a really simple concept but rather hard to describe.JTMcC.
Reply:Grasshoppers are also called rotary grounds I believe.  They are a twist/clamping device that goes on the end of the pipe.

Reply:The ground HAS to make electrical contact in the bevels, or right on top of the weld. Ground to the bare pipe and you'll arc burn the pipe and that's a cut out. Cut outs get you run off. JTMcC.
