when you "pre-set" for a weld, like a T weld, how do you keep the 2 materials square to each other? - magnet? - thanks, ed
Reply:Magnets, clamps, solid backer blocks, your teeth.... whatever it takes!!! Locking vise grips style clamps, square corner clamps are used a lot for holding stuff down in place. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:you can use magnets to hold pieces together for tacking, just don't weld too close to them- the arc will be deflected by the magnetic field.they're limited to use with magnetic metals thougha piece of square tube and some clamps works as do many other methods- can be as simple as holding/proping the pieces together, tacking, checking/adjusting and then weldingit's still possible that the heat from welding will cause distortion. try googling 'neutral axis + welding' and 'distortion + welding'then get some scrap and experiment- welding's like playing an instrument, you can be told/read about/shown how to do it but the only way to really learn is practice
