Hey all...As an engineering student, we´ve come to a problem in which we need to design a bench. We´ve got many design parameters, but we would like to use the modern regulations for the project and we don´t really know which ones to satisfy. The benches we´re designing are the portable ones, that you can assemble and dissasemble easily. Does anyone know which one are the most common regulations used in designing benches? safety factors? We´ve been looking in ASME but we´re still looking, Any help is greatly appreciated thouMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:what kind of bench?  work bench, people bench...
Reply:You'll probably find it's more an ergonomics issue rather than an engineering issue.
Reply:People bench,  just like these...well actually those seem fixed, but we´re trying to design the ones that you can mount and de-mount.I know it´s more of an ergonomic desition, but this is a project for the mechanics of material class, so our goal is to design the best structure. Anyone? Attached ImagesMy Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:Check these guyshttp://www.steelstadiums.com/sports-...r-company.html Search "portable bleachers", too
Reply:the real question is HOW portable do you want them? i am also an engineering student (BSME). from what i notice, the more portable the benches are, the less table they become. what are the dimesnions that you need the benches to be (Height, width, length)? what is the required weight capacity? any specific materisl they are asking for? what about fasteners? at work, we are required to use 304/316 SS fasteners and anchor bolts, whatever the client specifies. what about finishes? if they are painted, it may interfere with hinges and/or pivot points if the paint is not accounted for. how many are you planning on building (theoretically). it may be more feasible and efficient to build modular benches if theyare being built on small scale, but if you plan on creating a stadium sized bench, the fewer pieces you have, the better (i would think). give us a little more info and maybe we can help out. my e-mail is [email protected]. feel free to contact me if you want.hope that opens up a few ideas/doors for you.later,Andy
Reply:Thanks people....ACzeller in fact this is only a design project, we´re not really asked to send them to fabrication, and its very simpliflied, we just need to design the top part in which the people sit. So far we´ve decided to use a distributed load, still deciding on using a dynamic or static load (depending on the regulation). The Load we are using is an average weight of all the people that can stand on a 9 m beam.  As far as the material we will use a C style channeled beam (in Mexico it is called "polin" but haven´t  found the correct term in english) just like the pic shows. We made a program that found the best style of beam and this one works better for us. Now we´re restricted to use supports every 1.8 meters and the total lengh of each beam needs to be 9 meters. Cost and avaibility are also parameters to be taken into account, thus steel is our best choice so far. We also found a regulation that limits the deflection of the beam to be "total lenght / 600 " for this kind of problems. Thanks for the info man. I´ll post as soon as we get more information. Reply:Is there a security issue to consider here, if irate fans start yanking them up and throwing them at a ref for a bad call?.....or is that just european soccer fans.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

Reply:For benches you generally need to assume people will be standing on them.  The current European Standard is 7.5 kN/m^2 (156 psf)You will also need to apply this load to the standing areas.
