i was thinking about buying that harbor freight 220v tig welder. could i just plug it in my dryer out let in my laundry room. i plan on just using this welder occassional. the outlet is near the window in my laundry room. so i was thinking about just plugging it in there and running the cord out the window and welding on my pourch. would this work? or would i have to wire in a 220v and just weld in my garage. i know the risk or tig welding outside becasue of the wind blowing the shielding gas away but i think its worth a shot. thanks
Reply:That's perfectly doable. I keep a plate of 14ga, steel around for when my big fan is running and I want to shield the arc from the wind.I say go for it and enjoy. Use a heavy enough extension cord.
Reply:if your welding on your porch, make sure you put something down to keep sparks from falling between the boards and catching some dry grass or whatever on fire under your porch. The Welder Shop has great deals and reviews on Hobart, Miller and Lincoln Welders.
Reply:My home shop I keep a HF tig machine only to practice on...DC onlyI have access to an older Lincolin that has the HF and AC for al...The HF one is only a tool for practice and for 200$ dollars I have been happy.Plans are to rp it with a miller 250 sync or it would be great to purchase an older one....we will see in the next few months. weld it like you own it
Reply:my porch is cement so no fire. plug tig dosent give off really any spraks. thanks for the info guys
Reply:Look to make sure the outlet is grounded if not do not use it. Also see wheat imput current the unit requires 10, 20, 30amp what ever it is make sure the outlet has that big of a breaker. If unsure call an electrician just to make sure. Back in the day my day installed a 50amp circut for his dryer so he could weld on the circut. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Some welders have strange plugs. Many include cord ends in a NEMA 6-50P (a giant plug with the proportions of a regular 3-prong 115v plug). This isn't a dryer plug. About the only shop tool that is likely to have a similar plug is a kiln. I lopped it off and replaced it with a NEMA L6-30P, which is a 30A twist-lock. You can get this plug and recepticle at H.Depot. and get some additional 10-3 wire so that you can have an extension in your garage. I put 40ft of rubber cord (S.O.Cord) which allows me to go anywhere in the garage and outside if need be. Good luck.
Reply:Make your self a cord, plug it in to the dryer outlet and have at it. I have said it before, and will say it again, more rods have been burnt with a buzz box pluged in to the dryer than we will ever know.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
