An experienced welder told me it is better to "push" the rod instead of "dragging" it.  Something about the type of "pool" the rod makes.  Are there major advantages to either way?  It seems more natural to me to "drag' it...........tx..........na
Reply:Umm rule of thumb is "if it leaves a slag you drag". I always pull SMAW welds unless i'm going vertical up with like 7018 i use about a 5 degree push. A GMAW-S or GMAW-P is push only. GTAW is push. Not to say that pulling some of these processes wont' work either just get better results with proper technique. Aluminum GMAW musted be pushed. Pushing GMAW provides shallower penetration compared to pulling it. Hope this helps. --Gol'
Reply:Pushing will give you less penetration and a flatter bead.  Good for some situations...much less grinding if you need a smooth surface.  I was taught to keep it close to perpendicular in the flat and horizontal positions.
Reply:I usually drag or if im doing horozantle I hold the stinger low and hold the puddle up with the arc. Whe I was working at a trailer truck suspention manufacturere. If you were cauget pushing the MIG they would right you up. I welded thousands of components by pulling. They say you can watch the pudle that way. I rarly if ever drag now about 10 to 15 push. Miller recomends using 25 degres of push for pulse on aluminum, Steel Thunder Welding LLC.
