Hi Guys,Just a question on welding stainless steel,I'm trying to weld 2 1.6mm stainless pipes together and although I can weld mild steel and get a nice bead of weld,I cant get the same bead with stainless steel as it shows a 'melted, flat' look and no bead at all...Can anyone help??Mark.
Reply:I don't do much stainless, but to help out others, 1.6mm = about .064"Do you know what type of stainless you are welding and what type of filler?  What process?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Gemini,I think the flatter bead profile you're seeing is due to excessive heat.  Stainless has a much lower thermal conductivity than mild steel.  So it doesn't dissipate heat as quickly. Try turning the amperage down to 45-55 amps.  Originally Posted by GeminiDavid,I'm not sure what grade it is as I don't weld stainless that often but the amps are on approx 70 and its a 2.4mm tunsten,I use the same technique that I use with mild steel but the finish it totally different.Mark.Here's the picture of the weld..
Reply:Thanks, but what about the tunsten?? Do I need to use the .063",instead of the .094"???Mark.
