I am using a stick welder, 6013. I am welding 16 gauge and have noticed that where I have laid-down a fill-it weld I have some warping. Is there anyway to prevent this. It is probably from when the weld cools it is contracting the metal. I haven't noticed any weakness, but I could do without the warpage, however slight...Thanks in advance Steve
Reply:Yes - smaller rod and less amperage. Also, tack, tack, tack or small runs only. You cannot run a full length stringer on 16ga. material. With that said, what size rod, what machine and amps are you running?John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:1/16th Rod around 90 Amps, just a small Clark welder I can plug into a 110 20Amp plug.
Reply:16 gauge is pretty thick stuff. What I normally do with 18 gauge is I put my tacks a inch apart, then I take my die grinder with a cut off wheel and cut down the proud of the weld, then I hammer dollie the haz of the weld this is the blued area on either side of the weld, then I move on to my next inch.I know this is a long process it takes about a hour a foot, but its worth it.I had some guys from another forum teach me this and I have been using it ever since. Just my 2 cents Johnny Arial |
