I have a Maxstar 200dx machine. Is there a MIG spool gun that I can buy to run off my Maxtor machine? Is there any adapters/ conversions that can be made to make this work?Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.
Reply:Your Maxstar has constant-current output. Mig is normally done in constant-voltage output. You will need a wire feeder that is made to run on constant current. I think the Lincoln LN25 can do that. There are others, but I don't remember which ones they are.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thank you for your reply DesertRider33.I have emailed Miller if anything from their product lineup will enable me to use my Maxstar as MIG, I got a negative responce from them.I have looked into Lincoln LN25 feeder that you suggested and I have couple of questions. When it says it works of the ark? and doesnt need any other power source? Does that mean I hook it directly to where I normally hook the torch and go with it?Also, I switch polarity when I go between Tig and stick, in what mode do I need to run when (and if) I buy something like LN25? This unit is kinda pricey even for used, but I'm open to options.thanks for the help.
Reply:The Lincolin wire feeder is a great item. Any wire feeder that is VOLTAGE SENSING is what you need. Dont waste any money on a regular one it just wont work. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Offrdfun73,When you say a "regular one" I assume you mean a wire feeder that is not Voltage Sensing? What is a difference between the two?And besides lincoln, do you know any other brands that are "voltage sensing"Thanks for the help.
Reply:The 'regular feeder' Offroad referred to is one that connects to the remote control receptacle on the power source. The voltage-sensing feeder connects on the weld output cable only. MIG (solid wire and sheilding gas) is electrode-positive, meaning connect the feeder/torch to the positive weld output cable. For flux-core wire welding, connect torch/feeder to the negative output cable. There are some Miller feeders that are compatible with constant-current and are remote-control operated as well. If I am not mistaken, the XR push-pull feeder/torch I have here are for both constant-voltage and constant-current, though I have only used it on constant-voltage. The LN25 I believe can be used on constant-current or constant-voltage and is a voltage-sensing feeder but can also run on remote control when used with an optional remote-control kit from Lincoln. Other voltage-sensing feeders are the Miller Suitcase Extreme/VS series, but I do not know if they can be used with constant-current. There is also a Suitcase RC series for remote-control use only.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:DesertRider33,Your post is very informative thank you. How come when I contacted Miller they said that nothing in their product line will work with the Maxstar for MIG? Before I buy something this expensive, I want to have complete assurance that it will work.
Reply:If you can, before you buy a wire feeder and run it off your machine, try it first. Its nothing great trying to use a machine to control the welding voltage. LN-25 has a CC/CV switch inside it. I have 2 of them. I tried it and a Hobart Hefty wire feeder, both worked but not well at all. Stick welding is at about 27 to 32 volts at a constant current level regardless of the voltage. MIG short circuit welding is about 15 to 21 volts at a constant set voltage regardless of the current.Where ya from? Come and try one out.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I'm in Charlotte NC. Thank you for the offer. David, when you said it worked but not as well... could you explain how it worked and what didnt work too well? I assume you ran your feeder on constant current - which gave you mixed results?DR33, I have read your gun conversion thread, very nice.
